If you are thinking about becoming a pilot, you may be wondering whether to book a discovery flight or begin formal flight lessons. The two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they serve slightly different purposes.
A discovery flight is usually an introductory, low-pressure first experience in an airplane. A flight lesson is a structured training session designed to build the knowledge and skills required for a pilot certificate.
At Matta Aviation Services, both can be part of your path toward becoming a pilot. We provide flight training at Freeman Field Airport (3JC) in Junction City, Kansas, serving aspiring pilots, soldiers, veterans, military families, and students from the surrounding Manhattan and Fort Riley area.
What Is a Discovery Flight?
A discovery flight is an introductory flight with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). It is designed for people who are curious about aviation but may not yet be ready to commit to a complete training program.
At MAS, the discovery flight is a hands-on experience. You can sit in the left seat, take the controls under your instructor's supervision, and learn how an airplane climbs, turns, descends, and lands. Your instructor can also answer questions about:
- Private pilot requirements
- Training schedules
- Aircraft and instructor availability
- Aviation ground school
- Medical and student pilot requirements
- Costs and financing
- Career paths such as commercial pilot training
A discovery flight is not a sightseeing tour in which you simply sit in the passenger seat. It is an opportunity to experience the cockpit and determine whether flight training is a good fit for your goals, schedule, and budget.

What Is a Flight Lesson?
A flight lesson is part of an organized pilot-training program. It normally has specific objectives based on your experience level and the certificate or rating you are pursuing.
For a student beginning private pilot lessons, an early flight lesson may include:
- Preflight planning and aircraft inspection
- Cockpit orientation and checklist use
- Taxi procedures and airport operations
- Basic climbs, descents, and turns
- Straight-and-level flight
- Radio communication practice
- Takeoff and landing procedures
- Postflight review and logbook entry
As training progresses, lessons become more advanced. You may practice emergency procedures, cross-country planning, night operations, instrument maneuvers, and checkride preparation.
Unlike a discovery flight, a regular flight lesson is normally scheduled as part of an ongoing training plan. Your instructor tracks your progress and helps identify the next skills you need to develop.
Discovery Flight vs. Flight Lesson: The Main Difference
The primary difference is the purpose of the flight.
| Discovery Flight | Flight Lesson |
|---|---|
| Introductory experience | Structured training session |
| Designed for people with little or no flight experience | Designed for enrolled or committed students |
| Helps you evaluate the aircraft, instructor, and school | Builds specific skills for a certificate or rating |
| Usually includes hands-on flying with a CFI | Includes instruction based on a training syllabus |
| May be your first logged training flight | Normally logged as dual instruction |
| No obligation to continue | Part of an ongoing training plan |
The terms are not separate FAA certificate categories. “Discovery flight” is generally a flight-school term used to describe an introductory session. What matters for training credit is whether you receive instruction from an authorized instructor and whether the time is properly recorded.
Does a Discovery Flight Count Toward Private Pilot Training?
It can.
If the discovery flight is conducted as dual instruction with a CFI and is properly logged, the time may count toward the aeronautical experience requirements for your private pilot certificate.
Under 14 CFR § 61.109, a private pilot applicant training under Part 61 generally needs at least 40 hours of flight time, including required dual instruction and solo flight experience. Most students require more than the FAA minimum to become fully prepared for the practical test.
A discovery flight does not replace the complete private pilot curriculum. It also does not automatically satisfy every required training area. However, the instructional time can be a useful first step if:
- You fly with a CFI
- The instructor provides actual flight instruction
- The time is entered in your pilot logbook
- The flight is conducted in an appropriate aircraft category and class
Before your flight, ask the instructor how the time will be documented. At MAS, the discovery flight is designed to introduce you to the aircraft and the training process while helping you begin your aviation journey.
How Much Does a Discovery Flight Cost?
There is no single nationwide price for a discovery flight. The total normally depends on:
- Aircraft rental rate
- Instructor rate
- Scheduled flight time
- Ground briefing time
- Aircraft type
- Any additional training or administrative charges
MAS discovery flights are typically scheduled for approximately one hour. For current aircraft and instructor rates, visit the MAS flight training page or the discovery flight page. Contact MAS directly to confirm availability and current pricing before booking.
A regular flight lesson is priced similarly: aircraft time plus instructor time, with the final cost depending on the length and objectives of the lesson. Ground instruction may be billed separately or included according to the school's current policy.
What Should You Expect During a Discovery Flight?
Your first visit to Freeman Field will generally begin with an introduction to your instructor and a safety briefing. You may discuss your goals, review the aircraft, and learn the basics of the controls.
The flight itself may include:
- Preflight inspection
- Seat, headset, and control familiarization
- Taxiing and airport orientation
- Takeoff procedures
- Straight-and-level flight
- Gentle turns
- Climbs and descents
- A supervised introduction to landing procedures
- A postflight discussion
You do not need previous flight experience. Many students begin with no time in an airplane beyond being a passenger. Your instructor will explain each step and adjust the experience to your comfort level.
For soldiers, veterans, and military families near Fort Riley, a discovery flight can also be a convenient way to explore aviation while remaining close to Junction City, Manhattan, and surrounding communities.
When Should You Start Formal Flight Lessons?
You may be ready to begin private pilot lessons if you:
- Already know that you want to pursue a pilot certificate
- Have a schedule that supports regular training
- Want to begin studying aviation ground school topics
- Are prepared to practice between lessons
- Have discussed the training process and financial commitment
- Feel comfortable with the aircraft and instructor
Training consistently is important. Flying two or three times per week can help you retain procedures and make steady progress. Long gaps between lessons often require additional review, which can increase the time and cost needed to reach proficiency.
Your training plan may include flight lessons, ground instruction, solo preparation, cross-country training, written-exam preparation, and practical-test preparation. MAS can help you understand the steps and build a plan around your availability.
What Comes After a Private Pilot Certificate?
Private pilot training is only the beginning for many pilots. MAS offers a complete training pathway that can support recreational, personal, and professional aviation goals:
- Private Pilot
- Instrument Rating
- Commercial Pilot
- Multi-Engine
- Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
- Certified Flight Instructor–Instrument (CFII)
- Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI)
MAS also provides aircraft rental, flight reviews, instrument proficiency checks (IPCs), checkouts, and additional pilot support. This allows pilots to continue training and maintain proficiency in one aviation environment as their goals develop.

Should You Book a Discovery Flight or a Flight Lesson?
For most people who are new to aviation, a discovery flight is the best first step. It gives you an opportunity to meet an instructor, see the aircraft, experience the airport, and decide whether you want to begin formal training.
If you already know you want to become a pilot, you can discuss starting private pilot lessons immediately. Your first scheduled lesson may look similar to a discovery flight, but it will be connected to a structured training plan and specific learning objectives.
The best choice depends on your experience and commitment:
- Choose a discovery flight if you are exploring aviation or want to experience flying before making a larger commitment.
- Start flight lessons if you are ready to work toward a private pilot certificate and want a structured path.
- Talk with an instructor first if you are unsure about training requirements, costs, scheduling, or career options.
