FAA A&P Prep Course — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the MAS accelerated A&P prep course — who it's for, what's included, ArmyIgnitED funding, DME coordination, and how to enroll.
How long is the A&P prep course at MAS?
The accelerated program runs 10–12 days. Days 1–3 cover General, Days 4–6 cover Airframe, Days 7–9 cover Powerplant, and Days 10–12 focus on oral and practical exam preparation and DME coordination.
Who is this course designed for?
The course is designed for military maintainers transitioning to civilian FAA certification, aviation professionals formalizing their credentials, A&P school graduates who need structured exam prep, and motivated candidates who want instructor-led preparation rather than self-study alone.
Do I need an A&P school certificate to take this course?
This course is a prep and preparation program, not a certification pathway itself. To sit for the FAA A&P exam, you must meet FAA eligibility requirements — typically 18 months of practical experience in General, or 30 months in Airframe and Powerplant combined, or A&P school completion. Military experience can satisfy these requirements. Contact MAS to discuss your specific situation.
Is this course ArmyIgnitED / Credentialing Assistance (CA) friendly?
Yes. MAS is ArmyIgnitED and CA friendly. Contact us to discuss your specific funding request and how to apply your military education benefits to this course. See our dedicated ArmyIgnitED / CA page for more detail.
What is DME coordination and is it included?
A Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) is the FAA-authorized individual who administers the oral and practical portions of your A&P certification test. MAS coordinates the DME connection and scheduling as part of the program — you don't have to find and schedule your own DME separately.
How many students are in each class?
Class sizes are limited to 10 students. This small class environment means you get real instructor attention, not a seat in a large lecture room.
Is lodging available for out-of-town students?
Optional lodging arrangements are available for students traveling to Junction City, Kansas for the course. Contact MAS when inquiring about enrollment to discuss current lodging options and availability.
What does the course cover specifically?
The course covers all three FAA subject areas: General (regulations, aircraft systems, math, weight & balance, publications), Airframe (structures, hydraulic, electrical, avionics, landing gear), and Powerplant (reciprocating engines, fuel systems, turbines, propellers, instruments). The final days focus on oral exam simulation and practical test station preparation.
Do I take my written exam before or after the prep course?
Ideally, you should have your FAA written exams scheduled or completed around the time of the course. The course helps you understand the material at a depth that makes written, oral, and practical preparation far more effective. Discuss your specific testing timeline with MAS during enrollment.
What happens after I complete the prep course?
After completing the program, you will be prepared to take your oral and practical exam with a DME. MAS coordinates the DME connection. After passing, you submit your completed FAA Form 8610-2 (mechanic application) and receive your A&P certificate.
How do I reserve a seat?
Complete the enrollment request form at matta.aero/enroll. Class sizes are limited to 10 students, so early reservation is encouraged. MAS will confirm availability and next steps within one business day.
